Table 001

Table 001

Timber box construction table, a central draw, turned decorated table legs, balusters. A decorative corner piece in a corner between table box construction elements. “Ornamental furniture” or “sculpted furniture” was predominantly made by guild-associated and local carpenters in Przeworsk and the surrounding areas. These pieces of furniture are characteristic of the Przeworsk region. The furniture was decorated using three techniques: turned decorative elements in the form of pinnacles, balusters and beads, sculpted elements in the form of a pattern and the most characteristic engraved contour shapes. Engraved patterns most commonly adorned outward-facing furniture surfaces, such as front walls, and doors. These patterns also appeared on the building's front doors. Pattern-making technique: a drawing of the pattern was transferred using a pencil and cardboard templates, and then contours were engraved using a burin. The plant and floral motifs were finished with a stylized floral flagellum. Carpenters made furniture sets for representative interiors – parlours (known as alkierz, walkirz), chambers in the cottages of wealthy peasants. A set comprised a wardrobe, chest, chest bench, bed, sideboard and table. Patterns on rural furniture comprised creative takes on the extensive patterns adorning furniture in burgher houses.
The table is decorated using a four-petal flower motif, engraved on the corner of each skirt timber board end, repeated eight times. The motif shows a four-petal flower with a round centre, petals ending in a point and two veins marked on each petal. Decorative area dimensions: 95 mm x 95 mm. A four-petal flower motif was often seen on the fronts of decorated furniture: chests, couches, and wardrobe drawers.
