Scarf 004

Scarf 004

This lady’s head wrap is made out of white and red fabric, probably woven by a local weaver from Markowa (Rzeszovians, Łańcut subregion) The woven pattern is arranged in the form of multiple parallel red lines and stripes of various widths, running along the head wrap edges to form a type of a border. At the corners, the stripes overlap to form a motif of criss-crossing stripes, emphasised by the intensive red thread used for the fabric.

The edges feature dense red thread embroidered trims. On the inside of the trim, there is a densely embroidered decorative strip running all the way around the head wrap in the form of a wolf’s teeth. The corners are crowned with brush-like ornamental frills.

One head wrap corner features a stylized red thread embroidered floral pattern comprising a vertical branch with three diagonal and symmetric offshoots and leaves in the shape of rhombuses on both sides, arranged symmetrically on the branch and its offshoots. The entire motif is based on a single flower petal.
Red embroidery was used by brides and young wives. It took on additional symbolism on a wedding head wrap, emphasizing the innocence of the bride who was about to enter into marriage. The embroidered motif also carries symbolic meaning. The floral pattern is a clear reference to the tree of life.
