Apron 011

Apron 011

The apron made by Maria Adamczyk is part of a women's attire. It used to be put on the skirt and tied at the waist at the back. These are two strips of bleached linen sewn in the middle, crinkled at the top and sewn into a trimming that changes into strings for tying.
The bottom edge of the apron is cut into rounded serrations, contoured with white knitting. Lengthwise, there are holes trimmed with white thread (English embroidery) arranged in a wavy line. In each serration, there is a trefoil motif - a stylized periwinkle branch motif (?). Above, a compact strip ornament. Between two rows of dots, there is a wavy line of holes made with English embroidery. In its curves, there are five-leaf twigs (periwinkle?), arranged alternately, perpendicular to the direction of the line. Lines of dots topped with trefoils (English embroidery), arranged symmetrically to the entire strip ornament. All decorations are embroidered with white thread.
The periwinkle motif may suggest the use of an apron by a young married woman, as periwinkle was one of the most important plants used during the wedding ceremony and had a symbolic meaning - the same as rue, it was a symbol of maidenhood.
