Headcloth 006

Headcloth 006

Wimple, also called a headcloth or “zawicie”, “zowicie”, “obruska” or “zaodziewka” in Polish. A kind of wide linen shawl, a festive cover for the head and shoulders of a married woman. A wimple was the culmination of a woman's garment: after putting on a chamełka cap, a cap and covering the head with a covering, i.e. a narrow linen embroidered rim, a wimple was put on the head and shoulders. The narrower sides of the wimple ran down the front, reaching the height of the knee. The embroidered belt motif made of red lilies above the head, strengthened this part of the clothing. The wimple is also decorated with narrower edges, woven with red thread, creating patterns of smaller and larger squares and covered with an embroidered shorter strip of lilies. The edges are additionally finished, trimmed with red thread. Wimples that were going out of fashion were donated to churches by women, where they were used as altar tablecloths. The wimple described here served as a tablecloth on the side altar in the Church of the Bernardine Fathers in Przeworsk, from where it was transferred to the museum.

The belt motif was comprised of 24 repeated motifs of a lily (rod) with two curls departing from the symmetry axis. A thin embroidered stripe lies below a pattern made of tiny diamonds at the base of the main belt motif. Within the main belt pattern, the lilies in the center are concentrated, sewn every 2 mm, and five outer lilies sewn every 7-9 mm. Also, the pattern of small diamonds is appropriately thinned on the sides and thickened in the middle.
