Tombstone 001

Tombstone 001

A tombstone situated in the area of the former parish cemetery which is part of the Orthodox Church Complex in Nowy Bruśno (a branch of the Museum of the Eastern Borderland in Lubaczów). A three-part tombstone, consisting of a wider plinth, pedestal and a cross on the top. A two-step pedestal with a recess for an engraved epitaph inscription. A cross in the Latin type. At the intersection of the arms, there is a relief of a star inscribed on a wreath.

Five-pointed star. Rays on the outline of triangles with single notches on the axes.
A circular wreath, composed of two rows of analogous, small leaves, inclined along the entire circumference in one direction (to the right).
The star inscribed in the wreath is one of the popular decorative motifs used in the Brusno stone centre at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.
The star and the wreath are universal symbols found in different cultures. In the context of Christian sepulchral art, the star refers to the revelation of Christ. It acquires additional significance in combination with a wreath - a symbol of the victory of life over death and of an eternal reward.
