Painting 002

Painting 002

A watercolour folk painting made on grey wrapping paper, with the use of red powder paint dissolved in water. It has folded and taped edges. The "carpet" is made horizontally. Along the edge there is an ornamental strip, composed of a straight line and an adjacent chain of small arcs with a dot in each, then a herringbone line with herringbone motifs on one side, and a wavy line contoured with dots and a trefoil on each vertex on the other. The middle field is filled with a stylized floral motif composed of three vertically arranged herringbone twigs ending with five-leaf flowers, contoured with a circle of dots. The ornament is connected at the base by a broken herringbone line. The same twigs hang over them from above.
The item was exhibited at the Folk Art of the Lasowiaks exhibition in 1957. The herringbone motif is very characteristic of folk art; it was often used as a decorative element, for example on Easter eggs or in embroidery.
