Mangle 001

Mangle 001

A mangle - domestic cold ironing equipment for linen and linen clothes; in the form of a fairly wide, longboard with a handle. Transverse cogs are cut in the pressing part, and a hanging hole is drilled in the handle.
Decoration on the underside: three edges carved with a plane, above the handle two transverse rows of punched triangles, above them an inscription: RP 1881 D15STY and above them again two rows of triangles. Above them, there is a Christogram in two concentric circles surrounded by geometric flowers stamped with a blacksmith's puncher. Above is a rosette, also inscribed in two concentric circles, surrounded by similar flowers. Between these motifs, there are irregular crosscuts and small circles made with a puncher. The entire decoration is crowned with a repeated double row of punched triangles.
The rosette pattern is traditionally one of the most archaic solar symbols.
