Cymbalom 001

Cymbalom 001

The Cymbalom was built by a carpenter or a village violin maker. The sound box is a trapezoidal wooden box with profiled sides. The top board is made of spruce, the bottom and parallel sides are made of sycamore, and the side slats are made of beech. The whole item was once covered with varnish. In the lower part of the upper soundboard, there is a hole in the centre for putting in money. The opening for removing the money is in the side strip.
The Cymbalom have two circular sound holes, filled with a six-pointed compass rosette resembling a stylized flower with evenly spaced petals. The tops of the rosette arms are connected by arches. Everything is inscribed in a circle. Apotropaic significance was once assigned to the solar symbolism of the rosette. A popular ornamental motif in Podhale; it also appeared in the Podkarpacie region.
